Born: June 19, 1968, in Watertown, N.Y.
Education: Attended and played golf at Bridgewater College in Virginia from 1987-1989. Graduated with a degree in political science from the State University of New York at Oswego in 1991.
Bio: Orr has had a passion for the game of golf since the age of 8. As a youngster, he would ride his bike with his golf clubs on his back to the local golf course to pursue the game he fell in love with. Inspired by a former Touring Professional, named Jim Rusher, he developed his game and won several local tournaments as a teen.
He went on to play collegiate golf at Bridgewater College where he received numerous awards. Turning professional his senior year, David competed in several events on the various mini-tours around the country including the Ben Hogan Tour, T.C. Jordan Tour, and the Powerbilt Tour to name a few.
He moved to North Carolina in 1991 and started his career as a teaching professional. He worked at Cheviot Hills for four years, before becoming the teaching professional at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh for another 4 years.
Teaching the membership and public at both facilities, he made the move to Pine Needles in Southern Pines in 2000. There, he instructed golfers of all levels, ranging from beginners to those who compete at the highest level on the PGA Tour.
Currently: David is the Director of Instruction for the Campbell University PGA Golf Management Program. David has 22 years of experience to share as both a mentor and faculty/staff to more than 150 future PGA members and apprentices, he has been regarded by his fellow professionals as possessing a plethora of knowledge in understanding the various methods and techniques utilized in the industry of golf instruction.
Awards: In 2011, David was named the Carolinas PGA Section Teacher of the Year by the Carolinas PGA Section Awards Committee.
As a PGA Tour Instructor, David specializes in putting. Over the past several years, he has worked with over 50 touring professional on the PGA Tour, European Tour, Champions Tour, Web.com Tour and LPGA Tour. His reputation has spread “world-wide” as he has instructed players from over 25 different countries. His most notable clients include; 2013 US Open Champion, Justin Rose and Multiple PGA Tour Winner, Hunter Mahan.
As a Member of the Tour Advisory Board for CORE Golf Academy in Orlando, Florida David works closely with the coaches of this elite junior golf academy. David, also trains the professional staff at CORE in the area of putting and short game instruction. This past year David has worked with both the men’s and women’s Russian National Teams in preparation for the qualification process for the upcoming 2016 Olympics.
As a Researcher, David has done extensive R&D testing for golf companies such as; Edel Golf and Golf Pride. Also. he has presented some of his findings from over 26 case studies in putting at several conferences and seminars including the; 2007 and 2008 “Better Golf Through Technology Conferences” held a Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Currently, he working closely with a “team” of world-renowned biomechanists and putting instructors in the field of 3D Human Motion Analysis in Putting. The team includes: Dr. Rob Neal, Dr. Paul Hurrion, Kevin Weeks, and Phil Kenyon.
